SUN VALLEY NEWFOUNDLANDS

Timmy was born via c-section February 11, 2018 to parents, Ch Gold Coast's Keeper Of The watch and Ch Top Shelf's Summer Squeeze. He was the only male in the litter and had 4 sisters.

Momma Charmin had very little milk so I was bottle feeding the litter. On day four, I noticed Timmy was chilled and dehydrated and unable to nurse or take a bottle. After a call to my Vet, I ran to the clinic to get fluids for him. I would warm the fluids and injected him through out the day. He slept on my chest most of the night wrapped in a warm blanket. At some point during the night he seemed to perk up so I put him back with his Mother. Not having enough milk, but now strong enough to nurse, I bottle fed him small amounts every hour until morning when he seemed to be hydrated and his belly full. Back in the whelping box he went with his Mom and sisters.

Two days later, Timmy tried to fade again. I was exhausted from days without sleep and struggled with the decision to just let him go or try again. It's been my experience that some puppies are born with congenital problems that take a few days to manifest themself. Am I keeping him alive, only find out later he has problems?

I told myself I would try ONE more time. I gave him more fluids and frequent bottle feedings. This time it worked and he was like his sisters. Except Timmy stopped growing. No one could tell me why. He was eating and acting like a normal puppy, but he was so tiny.

That nagging question again, did I do the right thing?

Around 4 weeks old I noticed the hair on his tail wasn't growing. His sisters were dragging him around by the tail. Afraid his much bigger sisters would hurt him, I separated Timmy in an x-pen and he slept in his cat bed.

We fell in love with him and so did one of my other girls, Caper. She snuggled with him, cleaned him, played with him very gently, and acted like she was his Mother, to which his real Mother had no problem with.

He loved to be held and someone was always carrying him or holding him when he wasn't in his cat bed sleeping. To say he was heavily socialized was an understatement.

At 9 weeks old off to the Cardiologist we went, fearing the worse because of his small size. Timmy weighed 8 pounds, while his sisters weighed in at 18 and 20 pounds. My fears came true and Timmy had a substantial heart murmur. Dr. Davison said a grade 3-4. UGH. Being so young and small, I opted not to have him dopplered but to wait a few weeks. His testicles also didn't come down, but that wouldn't affect his health.

Timmy had quite the following on Facebook. My friend Heidi Peterson from Florida also fell in love with Timmy and said she wanted him. I was so conflicted about placing him because of his murmur and the fact that we adored him. I finally agreed to let Heidi take him, knowing he would have a fantastic home. While I was at the National Specialty that year, another friend, Patty Leonard, kept Timmy for me, and also fell in love with him and it was agreed that Heidi would pick up Timmy from Patty on her way home from the National.

I cried most of the week, not knowing when or if I would ever see Timmy again. Timmy made the trip back to Florida with Heidi, Paul, and Reeves sleeping in his cat bed and never missed a beat.

Heidi would take Timmy to her Vet weekly for a weigh in and a listen to his heart and he was starting to gain weight and grow! His murmur was also getting less and less audible. At 5 months old Heidi had him dopplered remotely when her vet could no longer hear his murmur and his heart appeared fine.

Timmy has turned out to be an awesome obedience puppy. I was awestruck by the video's Heidi would send me of Timmy working, swimming, and now carting.

Timmy now has his Beginner Novice title, his Rally Novice title, his CGC and Trick Dog Novice title. Heidi hopes to get his CD, carting, and water title the end of this year.

I was reunited with Timmy at our National this year! I can't even begin to say how much I looked forward to seeing him again! Timmy has a HUGE personality and a true Newf temperament.I LOVED seeing him!

Timmy was also dopplered again at the National and his heart cleared with flying colors!

Did I do the right thing? ABSOLUTELY!

I can't say thank you enough to Heidi for all she has done for and with Timmy! I'm forever grateful Timmy lives with you and Paul and the rest of your gang.
